Van life in Waterford

Waterford is the sunniest corner of Ireland's southeast and one of the most overlooked van life destinations on the island. The Copper Coast Geopark is a genuine slow drive — volcanic cliffs, coves, and a coastal road that rewards the unhurried. Add the Waterford Greenway (46km off-road cycling route, perfect van-as-base camping) and a harbour village that Lonely Planet once called one of Europe's prettiest, and you're looking at 3 days minimum.

Routes in Waterford

The Copper Coast Drive (R675) runs from Tramore to Dungarvan — 30 miles, every mile worthwhile. Drive it westbound so the sea is on your right. The road dips in and out of small coves and past geological formations that explain the Geopark designation — volcanic rock, sea stacks, quiet beaches with no car parks and no crowds.

The Waterford Greenway starts in Waterford city and runs 46km along a former railway line to Dungarvan. Van lifers typically drive the route and park up at key points to cycle sections. Kilmacthomas, midway along, has purpose-built camper facilities — one of the few dedicated stops in the southeast. The Nire Valley inland is a surprise: Comeragh Mountains, forest tracks, no tourists.

Waterford city itself is worth a half day — the Viking Triangle and Medieval Museum are genuinely good, and the city has the best coffee shops in the southeast. Park at the Quay and walk in.
