Tipperary doesn't have a coastline, but it has something rarer: space. The Suir Valley, the Nire Valley, the Galtee Mountains, the Glen of Aherlow — these are the landscapes that the Wild Atlantic Way crowds never reach. The Rock of Cashel is one of the most dramatic buildings in Europe, and on a weekday in October, you can have the car park to yourself.
Tipperary's inland location and low tourist pressure mean van tolerance is high almost everywhere. These four spots represent the county's best range — mountain, river, lake, and town. Filter the full spots list by Tipperary →
Forest road pull-offs under the Galtees. Walkers and locals only.
River Suir beside Cahir Castle. No drama year-round.
North Tipp on the Shannon. Busy May–Aug for boaters.
Medieval walled town. Quiet streets, riverside walk, no van pressure.
The two great Tipperary drives: the Suir Valley (N24 from Cahir to Clonmel, then R678 to Carrick-on-Suir — medieval towns every 15 miles) and the Galtee loop (R664 up through Lisvarrinane into the Glen of Aherlow, back via Tipperary town). Both are broad, well-surfaced, and almost entirely free of tourist traffic outside of bank holiday weekends.
Rock of Cashel is on the N74 above Cashel town — a 10-minute detour from any main road through the county. The approach from the north on the N74 gives the best view of the rock before you arrive. The Nire Valley (accessed from Clonmel toward Rathgormack) is the hidden gem: a completely empty mountain road, a waterfall car park, and a dead-end road through forestry that almost nobody drives.
For Lough Derg, the R493 north from Nenagh hugs the shore through Dromineer and Terryglass — one of the quietest lakeside drives in Ireland. The Shannon navigation brings boat traffic in summer but the roads stay clear. Portumna in neighbouring Galway is worth crossing into for a riverside lunch.
Clonmel Leisure Centre or Cahir guesthouse day rate. Nenagh also has leisure centre facilities.
Cashel or Clonmel town. Most filling stations in the county are happy to fill a tank.
Tipperary County Council facilities in Clonmel and Nenagh. Bring centres throughout the county.
Chez Hans in Cashel for a splurge. Café Hans next door for the same quality at half the price.
Cold inland but dry. Galtee valley roads passable. Rock of Cashel in winter mist is spectacular.
Everything blooms. Glen of Aherlow walks open up. River Suir in May is at its best.
Lough Derg gets boating activity but the mountains stay quiet. Best inland van county in summer.
Autumn colour in the Glen of Aherlow is the best in inland Ireland. October peak — plan accordingly.
Tipperary is the great inland secret — but the counties around it are worth knowing too.
