Limerick is the underrated midpoint of the west. It's where the Wild Atlantic Way turns inland, where the Shannon Estuary reaches its widest point, and where most van lifers stop to restock on their way between Kerry and Clare. That's a shame — the county has more to offer than they give it time for.
Limerick's spots benefit from low visitor pressure year-round. The county doesn't feature heavily in the van life conversation — which means tolerances are genuinely relaxed and you're unlikely to arrive and find the spot already taken. Filter the full spots list by Limerick →
Flying boat museum town. Shannon Estuary. Quiet year-round.
Medieval abbey ruins by the Deel River. Very low footfall.
Oldest inhabited site in Ireland. Day use, night informal — check seasonally.
Medieval town. Car park beside Dominican Priory. Year-round fine.
The N21 Kerry-to-Limerick road is a van lifer's motorway — practical, scenic enough, and takes you through Adare (stop, it's worth it). Better loop: Limerick city → Adare → Newcastle West → Abbeyfeale → across to Listowel (Kerry border) or back via R522 Shannon Estuary road through Askeaton to Foynes.
The Estuary road is slow but you get bottle-nosed dolphin country. Shannon Airport is 20 minutes from the city — useful as an arrival or departure point if you're flying in and picking up a hire van. The N18 north connects Limerick to Clare and the Burren in under an hour.
West Limerick is overlooked but genuinely pleasant: Glin, Loghill, Shanagolden — small villages on the south bank of the estuary with views across to Clare. The R521 runs the full length of the south shore and rewards anyone patient enough to slow down for it.
Limerick Strand Hotel has a public swim facility, or the UL Arena at the University of Limerick campus. Both offer day access. Limerick city is well-served for van lifer essentials.
Limerick city has multiple supermarket car parks suitable for top-ups. Dunnes Stores and SuperValu near the city centre are the most accessible. Stock up before heading west along the Estuary road.
Council facilities in Limerick city centre. Chemical disposal available at certified sites within the city. The city is well-connected — use it as a base for waste runs before heading to quieter spots.
Arthur's Quay area in Limerick city has good café options. The Milk Market on Saturday morning is one of the best in Ireland — arrive before 10am. On the road, Adare has quality food stops worth the detour.
Mild for Ireland. Shannon keeps temperatures up. Quiet and perfectly functional.
Sweet spot. Lough Gur in spring is beautiful.
Some activity but nowhere near coastal pressure. Shannon dolphin watching boats operate June–September.
Very relaxed. Harvest time in West Limerick. Uncrowded.
Limerick is the gateway between Kerry and Clare. Both are an hour away — and the county works well as a rest stop or base for either.
