The most underrated county in Ireland. Achill is the largest island in Ireland and barely on the van life radar. Clew Bay has 365 islands. The Nephin range is genuinely remote. Three spots in our directory; Mayo rewards the curious.

Blue Flag, Clew Bay backdrop, Nephin range behind. Quiet village, great beach. Apr–Oct.
Mountain valley between Sheeffry Hills and Mweelrea. Remote pull-offs, Delphi Adventure Centre nearby for showers.
Gateway to Achill Island. Amber in summer — push further out to Keem Bay for a proper overnight.
Several farms near Keel and Dooagh accept vans. Ask locally — classic Irish hospitality.
Cross the swing bridge and do a clockwise loop: Achill Sound → Keel → Keem Bay → Dooagh → back. Keem Bay is one of Ireland's best beaches. The road past Slievemore Mountain is extraordinary.
Killary to Blacksod Bay. This is the least-driven section of the Wild Atlantic Way and arguably the best. The road north of Mulranny through Bangor Erris to Belmullet is remote and rewarding.
Westport → Mulranny → Newport. The south shore of Clew Bay with Croagh Patrick looming. Westport is a good base for supplies before pushing north or west.
Genuinely remote and wild. Belmullet in January is end-of-the-world in the best way. Empty roads, honest weather, no competition for spots.
Best two months. Roads coming alive, Atlantic wildflowers, Westport lively without being heaving.
Achill and Westport busy. Push north of Mulranny and you'll find quiet. Keem Bay is spectacular but crowded weekends.
September in Mayo is exceptional. The county is probably at its best — golden bogland, empty Achill, warm evenings in Westport.
