Meath is where you come for ancient Ireland without driving to Connacht. Newgrange predates Stonehenge by 500 years. The Hill of Tara was the seat of the High Kings. The Boyne Valley has more passage tombs per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth. Meath also has the practical appeal of being 30 minutes from Dublin — ideal for people arriving from or departing to the city without paying Dublin parking rates.
Meath's spots combine heritage access with practical proximity to Dublin. Tolerance is highest in the rural west of the county; the Navan and Drogheda areas are more regulated. Filter the full spots list by Meath →
Only beach in Meath. Quiet outside summer. Estuary end is calmer.
Car park by the Boyne bridge. Slane Castle concerts aside, very quiet.
By the largest Norman castle in Ireland. Overnight informal — check notices.
Passage tombs, panoramic views, no facilities, minimal footfall.
The Boyne Valley loop is the essential Meath drive: Drogheda → Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange visitor centre — book ahead, timed entry only) → Slane → Hill of Tara → Trim → Kells → back to Drogheda. Full day, 60 miles. The Tara to Trim section on small R-roads is particularly good — rolling farmland, almost no traffic, occasional horse stud.
Loughcrew (west Meath, near Oldcastle) is the Newgrange that nobody goes to — same type of passage tombs, no queues, walk straight up the hill to Cairn T. The car park at the base is fine for a van overnight. In clear weather, the view from the top takes in eight counties. The drive west from Navan on the R154 through Athboy is good road throughout.
The M1 connects Meath to Belfast in 90 minutes and Dublin in 40 — this is the county's practical USP for van lifers. Park at Slane or Trim, commute into Dublin by bus or train if needed, and return to a van parked in silence two fields from a 5,000-year-old monument. There is worse arrangements.
Navan Leisure Centre. Also Trim and Kells have leisure facilities accessible for day rates.
Navan town or Drogheda. Good coverage throughout the county — no peninsula-style supply gaps.
Navan town and Drogheda. Note: Newgrange visitor centre has toilets and café (day use only).
Boyne Valley Hotel carvery in Drogheda or The Conyngham Arms in Slane for a proper stop.
Solstice window at Newgrange in December (lottery for inner chamber entry). Otherwise quiet and fully accessible throughout winter.
Heritage season begins. Spring light on the Boyne is excellent. Newgrange queues still manageable.
Newgrange queues peak — arrive early or book the first slot online. Rest of county stays calm.
Best combination: lower crowds, autumn light on the Boyne, harvest fairs in Trim. October is the peak.
Meath is the heritage heartland — these counties complete the eastern circuit.
